blog # 12

I have a nephew that has autism. He is 8 years old and he has to attend special classes. I don’t think that it is a bad case of autism because he is pretty smart. My brother did tell me that when there is a change in the daily routine or something suddenly happens, that can cause him to react in strange ways. I have learned that people can live healthy and successful lives with mild cases of autism. I don’t know a lot about it, but I can see my nephew getting better and learning more. I think that it is sometimes stressful for my brother and his wife. They have to have a great deal of patience and keep a positive attitude.

  1. Mimi,
The brain is an amazing thing and children with a diagnosis on the Autism spectrum are amazing little people. Their minds work in ways that are very unique and hard to understand, yet, they are so so smart. It can be a very challenging condition depending on the level of severity and it sounds like your family member is pretty high functioning. There is a lot of hope out their for mental illness and for children with Autism. Lots of education and therapy to teach parents strategies of handling this child and therapy for the child to grow and blossom developmentally is so important. In OT, I have worked with children on this spectrum and really enjoy my time with them. We learn from each other. Family support, patience, adaptations, and understanding are keys to success. Great post! Heather N.
