I believe that it is better to send drug addicts to mandatory drug treatment as opposed to jail. I think that addicts will have a better chance of rehabilitating in drug treatment. The atmosphere in jail can cause a person to come out in worse shape than when they went in. In drug treatment, they will have a chance to better understand their disease and learn ways to control it. The treatment is used for the purpose of helping people recover and jail is just to get bad people off the street. Some people deserve a second chance and don’t deserve to be put in jail with killers, rapists, and thieves. If someone proves that they cannot be rehabilitated, then maybe they belong in jail.

  1. Your comments regarding rehabilitating drug addicts gives me pause to agree and disagree with your views. I agree that sending people to prison for drug addiction may not assist with their recovery as it may in a required treatment facility; however, there are those who pose threats to themselves and society. There are some addicts who may have harmed other humans or destroyed lives while under the influence of drugs and alcohol. The loss of live occurred within my family. We lost an incredible intelligent human being. He was taken away from us at the age of nine by a person who was under the influence of drugs and alcohol while driving. Unfortunately, the person who was under the influence did not remember anything regarding the accident, he was entirely too high and intoxicated. Do I agree there is a need for treatment facilities for addicts? My answer is yes; however, if an addict does another person harm, then perhaps he or she may need more than rehabilitation facilities. I am of an opinion, at some point the person (s) must be held accountable for their actions.

  2. Mimi,
Hi, thanks for being such a loyal reader and commenter :) Your comments are enjoyable to read. Anyway, I agree that those who are addicted to drugs should be sent to a recovery program to try to become sober. I also believe that if there is a way in the justice system to sentence rehab and jail time when needed, then that is how it should be. People sometimes do need a second chance, however, if a wrongful death occurs, then recovery plus jail should be the path. Thanks for sharing! Heather
